Follow the yellow brick road

To Rockbourne Roman Villa, to continue the programme of villa plan ‘enhancement’ now that the weeds are trying desperately to obscure the wall lines, room layouts and bath suites first laid down over 1700 years ago.  A ton of gravel has arrived, but before it  can be used to mark out the 2nd, 3rd and 4th centuries the thistles, groundsel, grass and trefoil have to be teased out.

Then it’s time to create the ‘yellow brick road’, or more accurately the ‘yellow gravel wall-line’. And another embellishment can be added!  Whoever set out the lines ?thirty years ago didn’t allow for doors into rooms, something that has always raised concerns among our visitors. ‘How did they get from room to room?’  A look at the plan shows that  most of the doors are indicated, so we can show them too with a bit of returfing.

Jacqui, Michael, Warren and Cam are pictured hard at work on the corridor villa – and the fruits of their labours show in well-defined rooms and courtyard.
